Media and Information Literacy

Creating this activity was very informative in a way that it broadened my perspective and my understanding about the topic. Our chosen topic for the Performance Task is about flame wars on the internet. At first it was not really my top choice but since other groups were fast on choosing the topic, this was the only one that was left. Fortunately after researching about the topic something is really interesting about it. I have found out that flame wars on the internet is not just about the people trolling and insulting internet comments in an attempt to push someone into a fight or argument, it is also a type of cyberbullying. We all know that cyberbullying is always present on the internet. But being knowledgeable about cyberbullying and netiquette may prevent this, however when people lack the understanding, this situation could lead to serious problems.

My learning with flame war is divided into four parts. First, a person should understand that in the digital world we should have the responsibility, we must know that there will be times that it will be used to us as a threat, and as an emotional attack. Secondly, we should build awareness because if we have this, we know how to avoid it and we would not do it to others. Third, some people presume that when others share their thoughts and express it on social media, and they think that it is offensive, they always get triggered and comment on it without even thinking about the effect. Although it is not wrong to comment on a post, if we know that it will lead to an argument, we should already avoid it. Therefore, I also learned some ways how to avoid it and it is to not take comments or posts personally because if we do, it might trigger us. If a conversation occurs, we should take it lightly and not be defensive, mocking people only makes it worse. When we feel like the discussion is heating up, we should now have the control to let it go and do not answer.

Researching and gathering all the data needed for our presentation was the most challenging part for me. Flame wars content are not much talked about, that is why it was hard to find information and some of my groupmates do not really reply that much. However, that situation did not stop me from making sure that we are able to provide information about our topic. My learning relates to real world situations and problems because flame war is a societal problem that can be seen today. Humility is certainly possible anywhere, but it is also becoming increasingly rare. In a society when alternative facts abound, achieving humility is striving for truth. So much of what we do is self-motivated. The ideal way would be to question ourselves first, which is exactly what we should do. It is obvious that sometimes we always blame others for their acts, but I learned that being humble and understanding should also start within ourselves. I realized that before, I always make sure that I am understood by the people on the internet, so I always reply to comments if they misinterpret me. Sooner when I started to grow up and have subjects about netiquettes and cyberbullying, I have learned that I have also made mistakes and that is answering them back.

After all the learnings I have encountered during the making of this Performance Task I can say that I can use this in the present time and in the future. Being informed about this subject already makes a contribution for the prevention of this kind of matter. It makes me have a special effort to understand the opinion and other’s point of view. This is a lesson that is for my self-improvement and for the people around me because the lesson I learned is something I can share to the people I care about, especially to my younger family relatives. Teaching them at an early age will be beneficial not only in the present but their future because they will bring what I taught them as they grow up. Thinking far ahead, as a future parent I want to raise my kids on how to use the digital world smartly, just like how to raise them in the real world properly. In addition to this, because of proper teaching to myself and to my loved ones, it can also benefit other people because it can also be passed down to their friends. It will now result in good influences and can promote a healthier digital society.
